Tunnels

Tunnels are an extreme environment on the road network with a much higher risk in the event of an incident due to both the confined space and access problems.

In addition to the need to warn control room staff when vehicles break down or congestion begins to build within the tunnel it is critical to warn if there is a risk of fire within the tunnel. So in addition to the alerts used on the majority of networks, smoke and fire alerts are requirements in this application.

An example of a design for a video incident detection system in a small (two bores each about 500 meters in length) tunnel is shown above. The Rigel smart cameras provide the automatic alerts and the control room staff can take control of the existing analogue PTZ cameras installed in the tunnel to be able to zoom in to manage the incident. The network has redundancy built into it so that there is no single point of failure.
